Music Fanaticism, Fair?

In recent days the world is experiencing a phenomenon where a pandemic undermines life, economy, and governance. Some countries apply lockdown or social restrictions on a large scale, including Indonesia.

In Indonesia, many people overcome times of social distancing. And Work From Home (WFH) downloading and subscribing to entertainment media such as Netflix, Spotify, and other media. Then what to do with fanaticism?

During social distancing and WFH, many people do activities while spending their free time listening to music. And watching live streaming. Especially a few days ago South Korean musicians Blackpink and BTS just released a new song. As we know everyone has their own idols.

In Indonesia, the trend of South Korean idols is very strong and has very large fans. Even many who make his idol as a separate style or slang as Edgy. But a lot of fans are very obsessed with their idols. We can link this phenomenon with the concept of fanaticism.

How do artists respond to this?

Prakoso explained that fanaticism is excessive enthusiasm, be it an ideology. A certain figure or figure, or a certain institution without prioritizing rationality. You could say fanaticism a passion or obsession that is extraordinary in looking at a thing. Not least in the field of music. Even some people are very idolizing an idol and underestimate other people’s favorite genres.

In this phenomenon, the writer conducted a small interview with someone. Who had been in the theater world for a long time and who loved the genre of rock music. Especially the GreenDay band.

The guest speaker who came from a theater team was of the opinion. That it is natural for someone to have an idol. In fact, he really teaches the phenomenon when a fan deifies or underestimates other people’s genres. He teaches this because it is everyone’s right. But with a record sooner or later the universe or obsession he has will decrease.

But he argues when an artist has that character, he is not an artist. Because according to him, art is an abstract science and not everyone has the same definition of art.

What about the responses of other sources?

Unlike the second speaker. He told me that he had been very fanatical with a rock band from California, USA, namely GreenDay. During high school, he often mocked and demeaned other genres, especially boy bands and girl groups from South Korea. But during his lecture phase. His perception of the music world began to change when he joined one of the local bands in his college. He even began to like the South Korean drama series even though he remains a hardliner fan of GreenDay.

He explained that it’s only natural that we see someone very ambitious and passionate about an idol. Because someone needs an idol or benchmark in finding their true identity. But he does not agree when someone is bullying someone else’s hobby. Because humans are the smartest creatures in the world, it is not appropriate to deify and underestimate others.

In addition, the author takes the opinion of a Stand Up Comedian named Pandji Pragiwaksono tells through. His Stand Up that can be watched on his YouTube channel that he doesn’t like someone being his fan. Not only in charge of making the audience laugh. But every time he slipped his critical attitude to the phenomena that occur.

3 Main Points

There are 3 main points in the video that can be used as a reason. He does not like himself to be an idol of many people. The first point for fans is too demanding because, without them, the idol would not exist. The second is that most fans are not fans because people know their idols because they are on the rise. Not because of fanatics. The third one is that fans can take someone’s life because it doesn’t match what they want.

We can conclude two answers from the resource person that there is nothing wrong with choosing an idol. But there are some important points in responding to this phenomenon. Fanaticism itself is able to describe the character of individuals in responding to a certain trend. The enthusiasm that is very overflowing is very reasonable by some people. But sometimes it can make someone uncomfortable and even take a person’s life.

The author argues that there are certain measures of fanaticism. If the reader reads this article, the reader will see that when he becomes fanatic he will become edgy. Edgy in the sense that he will look for characters that fit his personality. When he has been able to find his idol, consciously or unconsciously he is trying to find. And apply his idol to his life and show that “this is my favorite” or “I really am”.

What stages make people fanatical?

At this stage, a person who has entered fanaticism will try to make himself a reflection of his idol. A fanaticism will try to sacrifice anything for his idol either from buying his idol souvenirs. Concert tickets, and even giving gifts to his idols. And no longer at the stage that he will show his character.

But we need to know that fanaticism can be seen from two points of view, positive and negative. From a positive point of view. A fanaticism will try to give opinions or suggestions so that his idol can still show maximum performance. And in accordance with the original character of the idol. Then why is there a positive?

This is because when individuals will have characters that are able to be accepted by fellow fans. In addition, when various individuals form a community, they will continue to follow and even provide input to related idols. They are no longer just fond of, watching concerts, or pursue the field of music.

Negative side

Meanwhile, from the negative side, when a fan tries to follow, sue. Even to the death of an idol as said by the banner. This will lead to the other side of art. Namely, making ordinary people paranoid about fanaticism. Because fanaticism is still considered an anarchist act even though fanaticism in music is not as hard as soccer fanaticism.

You could say the author understands the phenomenon of fanaticism is arguably reasonable in the world of music. It was mentioned earlier that a person has the full right to determine his idol. And the genre of music that matches his character. Although the taste of music that he likes will change according to a certain moment. But it becomes a problem when fanaticism behaves anarchy or which is detrimental to others.
